How to taste beer like a brewer

Friends holding up pilsner glasses and a bottle in a celebratory toast

Look, swirl, sniff, sip, savor — the five-step ritual our panel uses on every batch, and how to run it at your own table this weekend.

The five S ritual

Sight first: hold the glass to the light and read the color and the head. A Skerrick pale ale should glow copper with foam that lingers. Then swirl gently to wake the aromatics, and sniff twice — short, then deep.

Sip enough to coat the palate, breathe out through the nose, and savor the finish. The first sip tells you the manner of the beer; the third sip tells you the truth about it.

Try it at the taproom

Our Saturday 3pm tour ends with a guided tasting flight of three — the same flight the panel drinks. Bring a friend and argue about the finish; that is half the fun.

Book a table afterward and put the ritual to work on a full pour.
